This Week: POWDER DAY!

Are there two better words in skiing than “Powder Day”? We can’t think of any! And, last Friday, we had a classic powder day in the Mt. Washington Valley. Beautiful views and fresh tracks as far as the eye could see.

Weather Report
As we head toward the weekend, we have a classic “if this happens” weather scenario tomorrow. The good news is that our chance for all snow in the Mt. Washington Valley is very, very good. In fact, if all things swing our way we could be talking about some significant accumulation. It looks like we’re in for another powder day, and terrific conditions for the weekend.
Right now, the groomers are taking center stage. After the hard work of the snowmakers early in the season, the groomers are out each night making things smooth and silky. On the Nordic trails, the skate lanes and classic tracks will be in prime condition for the weekend.
Weather, snowmaking and grooming updates can always be found on the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Better than a Free Lunch: Free FUN!

It’s been said there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but the Mt. Washington Valley does have plenty of free opportunities to have some fun in the snow. In our minds, that’s better than any lunch menu.

Here’s a look at some of the free activities around the Mt. Washington Valley:
Quick Tips at King Pine: Every Sunday morning. Join a pro from the King Pine Ski & Snowboard School for a complimentary 1-run Quick Tip (must purchase a lift ticket to participate). Available every non-holiday Sunday from 9-10am. Look for the Quick Tip tent at the base of the Polar Bear Triple chair lift.

Friday Night Lights at Settlers’ Green: Every Friday night in February. Free hot chocolate, bonfire and VIP cards. 4-8pm.

Jerry’s Free Ride Wednesdays at Red Parka Pub: Wednesdays in February. Be in the Pub between 6-8pm and as Jerry gives away lift tickets to all of the best ski areas.

Audubon Snowshoe Tours at Purity Spring Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary: Saturdays in February. This guided tour departs from The Mill Indoor Pool & Fitness Center at Purity Spring Resort at 2pm every Saturday. Free for Purity Spring Guests and King Pine skiers with ticket.  Complimentary with regular trail pass fee. Weather dependent.

Thom’s Amazing Waxing Demonstration: Every Tuesday. Thom will teach you how to maintain waxless and waxable skis – Classic and Skate.  Well maintained skis are more fun and easier to ski on.  – Free! The session takes place in front of the fireplace in the Jackson Ski Touring Center

Up, Up, Up Mt. Washington

Each summer, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Mt. Washington-the highest peak in the Northeast. In winter, visitors are far fewer, but those intrepid souls get to see the beauty of winter up close and personal.

Here are a few ways to see Mt. Washington in winter:

SnowCoach - The SnowCoach at the Mt. Washington Auto Road is indeed a unique way to travel. These same custom built Chevy passenger vans ferry guests up the Auto Road in summer, albeit with four tires instead of the winter treads. Capable of carrying up to 9 passengers, each trip up the road in a SnowCoach can be as unique as a snowflake, with no two ever being exactly alike. The SnowCoach tour up Mt. Washington takes approximately 1 ¼ hours and departs daily, weather permitting, on a first come, first served basis. The price for adults is $45, $30 for kids ages 5-12.

Ski to the Clouds - North America’s Toughest 10K! Cross country skiers race up Mt. Washington! Race begins on the trails at Great Glen Trails and then up to the finish at treeline on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, Ski to the Clouds includes a climb of more than 2200 vertical feet over the final 6 kilometers. The race is a true freestyle event: skiers can use either skating or classic technique. Limited to 150 competitors. College or High School Students $25/Individual $45

Winter EduTrips - Join the Mt. Washington Valley’s very own weather experts from the Mt. Washington Observatory at the top of New England’s Highest Peak on a Winter EduTrip. These special trips are a chance to experience the remarkable vistas of snow-covered peaks and Mount Washington’s winter secrets that are known only to the most intrepid mountaineers. EduTrips leave from the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road at 8:30 A.M. on the first day of the trip, spend the night at the Observatory on the summit, and then return to the valley on the following afternoon (weather permitting). The trip includes transportation to and from the summit via snow tractor, several classroom sessions and/or outdoor field trips, tours of the Observatory and the summit area, meals, overnight lodging in bunkrooms, and a certificate of course participation. The cost is $459 for members of the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory and $499 for non-members.
