Buckle Up: Journey through History of Mt. Washington Auto Road

Local author pens new book using collection of vintage images to share history

Arcadia Publishing and local author Steven Caming have teamed up to bring you Mt. Washington Auto Road, the newest addition to the popular Images of America series. The book is set to release on May 19, 2014 and boasts more than 200 vintage images of past journeys up the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

Reaching more than a mile in the sky and acting as the crown of the Presidential Range, Mount Washington and the Mt. Washington Auto Road have been luring and challenging adventure seekers on foot, on bicycles or in race cars for over 150 years. This new pictorial history shares the story of Mt. Washington Auto Road from its public opening in 1861, through its continued growth today. A collection of vintage images, many of which have never before been published, shed light on the nation’s first man-made attraction.

Author Steven Caming also highlights the area surrounding Mt. Washington Auto Road, which is located in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Readers can glimpse the evolution of transportation from mountain wagons drawn by six-horse teams to modern cars and gain a better understanding of the historical significance of the auto road. Mt. Washington Auto Road documents the history of this eight-mile path to the summit of the Northeast’s highest peak.

About the Author of Mt. Washington Auto Road

Steven Caming has lived and worked in the Mt. Washington Valley for more than 25 years. During that time he has written countless articles, produced three historical documentaries on Mt. Washington subjects and participated in several lifetimes worth of events at the Mt. Washington Auto Road, where he has previously served as media and marketing director.

Caming has also written extensively in local and regional press and does specialty and business writing for various magazines and corporations. A historian at heart, much of his work has focused on the endlessly fascinating legends and history of Mt. Washington, (many of which he has personally reenacted in the process of producing his documentaries, all of which ran on PBS).

This is the first official history of the Mt. Washington Auto Road ever written and Caming was able to access the finest collections of photographs (many never before published) to help tell the story of the nation’s oldest manmade attraction. It is a story this author has been studying, sharing and living for most of his professional life.
