Mt. Washington Auto Road Closes for Summer, Prepares for Winter Tours

Modernized Mt. Washington SnowCoaches to begin tours in December

The Mt. Washington Auto Road ended its 153rd season of summer operation and is now closed for the summer season for all traffic and guided tours, but will reopen in December for winter tours to 4,200 feet.

First opened in 1861, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is America’s original man-made attraction. Located on Rt. 16 in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, just north of the Mount Washington Valley and minutes south of Gorham, the Auto Road has a long and winding history, much like its 7.6 mile trip up to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast.

Winter operations are scheduled to begin in December for winter tours aboard modernized Mt. Washington SnowCoaches. The Mt. Washington SnowCoaches are one-of-a-kind, all-wheel drive vehicles with unique 4-track systems allowing the ability to climb the Auto Road with as many as 9 passengers all the way to treeline, or 4,200 feet, on the northern flank of Mt. Washington. Additional information and sneak previews to be released late this fall.
