Broadway’s Musical Hit “Hairspray” Comes to Fryeburg Academy

The Fryeburg Academy Arts Department presents this year’s all-school musical, Hairspray, at 7:30 p.m. on November 6th, 7th, and 8th at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center.

The show tells the tale of Tracy Turnblad, who overcomes rejection and achieves her dream of performing on a TV dance show in 1960s Baltimore, a time riddled with racism and segregation. The popular Corny Collins Show is no exception. When the dance program holds auditions for an opening, Tracy, played by Dana Thibodeau, runs down to the studio with her best friend, Penny Pingleton, played by Helen Driesen, to try out. Tracy, who is by no means the cultural stereotype of a “pretty girl,” conquers the odds and earns a spot on the Corny Collins Show. She is quickly launched into stardom, but can’t stand that the show won’t allow the integration of Negroes and is determined to make it happen, even if it means she will loose her position on the show and her new relationship with the heartthrob, Link, played by Alex Ouellette.

Hairspray is a show about accepting difference, so it is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the diverse population of students, rarely found in Maine.  Additionally, the collaboration of the entire Arts department as well as mementos from Fryeburg Academy’s early 60’s archival collection will all be on display for a complete immersion in the era.

Hairspray is a highly energetic show filled with many dance numbers, sure to leave you thoroughly entertained.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/seniors. You can order online at or by calling the box office at 207-935-9232. The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center is located at 18 Bradley Street, Fryeburg, Maine.
