Many resorts throughout the valley offer snowshoe rentals and tours. Purity Spring Resort XC and Snowshoe Reserve,Great Glen Trails, Bretton Woods, Jackson Ski Touring Foundation, Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation andBear Notch Ski Touring Center all offer beautiful and peaceful snowshoeing experiences.
Jackson Ski Touring Foundation (JSTF) was rated the number one best snowshoeing centers in the country for families by Snowshoeing Magazine. JSTF offers self-guided snowshoe trails andtwo hour guided snowshoe tours with local historian and naturalist Peter Minnich, every Tuesday from 1 to 3pm, every Saturday at 10am and 1pm, and every Sunday at 10 am. JSTF tours are $10 and also include insider tips from guides who will reveal hot spots along the trails and off the system that most people would never get to find. This is a fun and interesting way to enjoy a day out on the trails.
Great Glen Trails, an outdoor center located in Pinkham Notch, offers a trail network that allows for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. Great Glen Outfitters will rent and fit you with high quality snowshoes and poles. Great Glen also offers a unique twist on guided tours with their Starlit Snowshoe Tours. From 7 – 8:30pm experience the wonder of a night time winter walk with an Appalachian Mountain Club Naturalist. You’ll use your senses without the aid of flashlights to navigate the trails while listening for owls calling and exploring the peaceful woods by night. Dates of these tours are throughout the 2015 season, with one coming up on January 18th. You will want to register for these tours as they book quickly.
Bretton Woods offers snowshoeing on the grounds of the historic Omni Mount Washington Resort. Enjoy trekking on the groomed Nordic trail system as you take in the panoramic views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range. You can also explore the trails that follow along the Amonoosuc River, or trek over the high-country snowshoe trails along the ridge-line of the Bretton Woods Mountain Resort for a higher elevation adventures.
At Bear Notch Ski Touring Center you’ll delight in spectacular riverside views, pristine waterfalls and picturesque flat meadows. And depending on what kind of adventure you’re looking for, you’ll also come upon challenging hills. The touring center also offers a welcoming warming hut with warm soup, hot chocolate and other beverages and snacks as a great resting point on your winter snowshoe adventure.
Purity Spring Resort also offers a trek by the on-site NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll be taken on a tour through quiet forests and passing by a pristine lake for a complete outdoor adventure.
Snowshoeing is a wonderful winter activity to enjoy as a couple or a family. It’s low impact and suited for all ages and abilities. Spend the day exploring new trails or scouting for wildlife.
