Auditions For “The Jacksonian” at the M&D Playhouse March 12th and 13th

CONWAY — M&D Playhouse will be holding auditions for “The Jacksonian” by Beth Henley, as directed by Eric Jordan, at 1857 White Mountain Highway in North Conway on Sunday, Mar. 12, at 6 p.m. and Monday, Mar. 13, at 6 p.m.

jacksonianSet in Jackson, Mississippi, 1964. When his wife kicks him out, respectable dentist Bill Perch moves into the seedy Jacksonian Motel. There, his downward spiral is punctuated by encounters with his teenage daughter, a gold-digging motel employee, a treacherous bartender, and his now-estranged wife. Revolving around the night of a murder, “The Jacksonian” brims with suspense and dark humor and unearths the eerie tensions and madness in a town poisoned by racism.

There are two male roles and three female roles available:
Rosy Perch
, female, 18-29. Must be able to look and play 16. Daughter of Bill and Susan. Off-balance, gawky and shy, but decidedly not a victim: has a manic energy and can be a real player when necessary. Perceptive about weaknesses of others. Devoted to her parents and desperately wants things as they were. Because of her acne, unused to attention from men.

Bill Perch, male, 40-60. A proud dentist and current resident at The Jacksonian Motel. Separated from Susan and father of Rosy, he’s lost control of his family and practice. Wants to repair both, but can’t seem to keep things from going further downhill. Has a buried temper, but intent on avoiding pain, for himself and others.

Eva White, female, 30-45. Awaitress and maid at The Jacksonian Motel. A high school drop-out, beaten down but full of fire. Talkative, blunt, harsh, passionately racist. Desperate to get married, she’s looking for a fairy-tale ending, and might be strong enough to force it into being. Has her eyes set on Fred.

Fred Weber, male, 35-50. A bartender at The Jacksonian Motel. Charming, manipulative, but also downright wacky, a womanizer and a vicious thug with a checkered background, including time as a carny. Considers himself “a man with appeal,” and certainly has an eccentric flair. Has made promises to Eva in exchange for an alibi. Menacing but also seriously peculiar, he believes wholeheartedly in his own righteousness.

Susan Perch, female, 40-60. Bill Perch’s wife and mother of Rosy. An upper-middle-class lady, with an instinct for making things more beautiful than they are. Subject to violent and sudden mood swings. Proper, but can be provocative, even barbed. Still somewhat in love with Bill, she is filing for divorce, furious that he allowed her doctor to perform a hysterectomy, a betrayal she thinks she may never recover from.

Performance dates for “The Jacksonian” are Apr. 20-30.
