League of NH Craftsmen!

]><The League of NH Craftsmen’s annual ornament for 2014 is Whispers of Spring, a hand-formed cast pewter birch branch made by Kristine Lane and Paulette Werger, both juried in metal by the League. Lane and Werger created the ornament to pay homage to the official state tree of New Hampshire. The white birch is one of the first trees to come into leaf, celebrating the emergence of spring. It has a celery-colored ribbon for hanging on a tree or wreath.

Whispers of Spring ornaments are sold exclusively by the League of NH Craftsmen Fine Craft Galleries. Each ornament is numbered as one of a limited edition and is signed by the artists. The ornament comes beautifully gift-boxed and sells for $23.

Cassidy Gallery now has 31 artists, all from New England, and most from Mt. Washington Valley.   There are also now have outstanding jewelry artisans.  In this e-mail, we introduce you to Laura Castano, whose unique work in copper and stones intrigues everyone who loves handcrafted jewelry.

LAURA CASTANO – COPPER OWL JEWELRY

Bottom left: the tools of the trade      Bottom right: the finished piece!

Western Massachusetts artisan Laura Castano’s work in recycled copper is something unlike anything we’ve ever seen or offered here in the Gallery.  Her mastery of wire weaving along with unique stone setting results in one-of-a-kind works of wearable art.  Laura states: “I twist, weave, coil and hammer various weights of copper wire to create one of a kind pendants, earrings and bracelets, many of which I embellish with glass or semiprecious stone beads.”

Laura’s unique style of work straddles the line between Art Nouveau and Steampunk.  As an amateur wildlife biologist/botanist who travels around with binoculars in her purse, Laura strives to create work that are representative of things she sees in nature. Her woven copper snakes (see below, part of her “Earthenwear” line) are reminiscent of ancient Roman or Green jewelry, organic in nature but original in design.

A closeup of Laura’s “Earthenwear” Snake. Laura describes this piece as follows: “I overlapped the base wires in this sinuous woven piece for extra depth and texture. The antique porcelain beads beautifully accent the blue/ green patina achieved by adding salt to my fuming jar.”
A sampling of Laura’s wire and stonework.  Clockwise from top left: hammered copper and porcelain, “Earthenwear” Collection large leaf pendants with hammered frames utilizing various weaving techniques, caged turquoise bracelet, pendant of dragon’s vein agate with hammered copper and a hammered copper and turquoise “donut” pendant.

We have a wide assortment of Laura’s wonderfully creative copper jewelry. All of her jewelry are one-of-a-kind pieces, painstakingly made by hand.  Please stop in soon to select a piece for your collection…or for someone else.

Remember….Valentine’s Day is coming soon!  Just over three weeks away.  We will be happy to ship your favorite Copper Owl piece – or a beautiful piece by artisans Cynthia Battista, Barbara Smith McLaughlin, Linda Sorensen or Wendy Wetherbee to you in time for that special day.
