Eagle Mountain Golf Course Offers Free Ladies’ Clinics in June

On a brilliant spring afternoon, I descended the storied 9th fairway of the Eagle Mountain Golf Course in Jackson, NH towards its driving range along with 30+ fellow female duffers. Our destination? The first of several free Sunday afternoon ladies’ golf clinics with PGA Pros Julie Rivers and Bob McGraw.

No matter where you like to golf, it’s a great idea to start out your golf season by taking a lesson. Bad habits follow you through the off season. Start the year out right with a lesson. These Sunday sessions break down your game into key components that make it easy and fun to improve.

The group ranged from never-evers to more experienced golfers looking to brush up their skills. Skillfully, Julie and Bob managed to keep the large group engaged and the instruction appropriate despite the wide range of experience.

Sunday’s lesson started with the chip shot. Dividing the larger group into 6 groups, the pros took us through the stroke, much like a putting stroke but with a wedge.

Then we moved on to pitching. Starting with a partial swing, to a half swing, to a full swing, we each worked on our form and learned how far the ball went with each.

Then the fun part – driving. We each took out our 1 club and practiced our long drives with varying degrees of success but with great enthusiasm.

This post isn’t meant to try to recreate the content of the lessons – I will leave that work to the pros – but it is meant to stress the value of taking lessons and the camaraderie of a sunny afternoon with a group of strangers soon to become friends.

After the lesson, the Eagle Mountain House offered a $10 cocktail and appetizer special on the veranda. On this sunny spring afternoon, it was a wonderful wrap up to a great learning session with two of the Valley’s best known pros.

McGraw shared the following free and inexpensive golf clinics and greens fees coming up in the coming months. It’s a great way to improve your game while enjoying one of the Valley’s most beautiful locations for golf.

Upcoming:

Bob McGraw will be offering a Free Clinic for women the next two Sundays from 1 to 2 pm.

During the month of June, the Eagle Mountain Golf Course will be offering a discounted green fee of $15 for women.

In July they offer free clinics for families on the first three Sundays from 1 to 2 pm.

Reduced green fees of $10 for juniors and $15 for adults  in the month of July will be offered when families play together.

Saturday Clinics: Every Saturday from 10:30 til 11:30, Bob offers clinics covering the short game or the full swing. The fee is $20 and limited to 6 students. Call the pro shop at 383 -9090 to sign up. For more info >

Fall Into Autumn Golf in the Valley

Golf is a social game. I came into it when I found myself divorced and looking for new friends about 10 years ago. Mount Washington Valley’s golf scene is only rivaled by its skiing scene so I quickly made friends and improved my game in some of the several golf leagues that take place weekday nights in the spring, summer and fall.

I was reminded of this social aspect when an email circulated work looking for coworker duffers to get together at the storied North Conway Country Club for a 4:30 pm round. A fellow employee had a membership and had organized an impromptu game. 4 foursomes arrived on a very warm late summer (or early fall – take your pick) afternoon.

Golf has a way to breaking down social barriers and that night was no different. I work at the local hospital and with over 400 employees, it’s easy to not know all of your coworkers. We had players from every department ranging from the lab to the inpatient ward to the OR. What we shared was a high handicap and a love for the game. The warm weather and superb condition of the greens only supplemented the evening’s splendor.

North Conway Country Club is right in the heart of North Conway. How many courses boast an active train track to the east and a harvestable corn field and river bed to the south. And don’t forget the stunning Cathedral and White Horse Ledge to the west. Your hardest decision of the day won’t be which club to use but rather which direction to look in to drink in the splendid views.

While we did not partake after our round, the NCCC now features a new food and beverage director who has revamped the menu and the service so that you can enjoy a tasty meal and adult beverage whose quality matches the views and greens conditions of the course. Its deck overhanging the first tee and train track arguably offers the best views in the Valley. You don’t need to play a round to eat here – check it out.

Like most courses, you get the best value playing twilight and midweek. Avoid the crowds and higher rates of Saturday and Sunday mornings and you might be able to score a better rate. Or find a group or corporate deal to save even more.

Golf in Mt. Washington Valley goes strong through foliage season and with the help of a wind shirt and winter golf gloves, can continue right through to when courses close. That date varies based on weather, but I have seen closing dates range from late October to early November. Indian Mound in Ossipee often goes later. Only your yearning for skiing will interrupt your golf game earlier than weather might dictate. So squeeze in those autumn rounds now – you never known what game might be your last for 2016!

Hale’s Location Golf Course and The White Mountain Hotel & Resort announce Fundraiser Golf Tournament and Dinner to benefit Hale’s Location wayne_sprouse_webGolf Pro, Wayne Sprouse

Hale’s Location Golf Course, Hale’s Location Owners Association, The White Mountain Hotel & Resort and Jonathan Rivers of the Indian Mound Golf Course will host three 9-hole shotgun golf tournaments on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Hale’s Location Golf Course in Hale’s Location, NH to support the Wayne L. Sprouse Medical Expenses Fund. The tournament will be followed by a dinner at the White Mountain Hotel and will feature a silent and live auction. This fund has been established to help Hale’s Location Golf Pro, Wayne Sprouse who has been presented with some serious medical challenges.

Wayne Sprouse the Head Golf Professional and Pro Shop Manager for Hale’s Location Golf Course joined our team in the spring of 2013.   Wayne has lived in the Mt. Washington Valley since 1997 and resides in North Conway with his wife Karen and their two children Cody and Timothy. Wayne is former golf shop owner himself, previously owning Dave’s Golf Shop. He is an avid golfer and was a 2002 participant in the NH State Amateur. Wayne holds the Hale’s Location 9-hole course record of 33, along with former Pro, Jonathan Rivers.

In the spring of 2014, after dealing with some unusual symptoms throughout the winter, Wayne was given the unfortunate diagnosis of ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. In dealing with this diagnosis and the many tests, procedures and doctor visits that ensued, Wayne was then given news that no one could ever be prepared for. He was also diagnosed with Stage-3 Follicular Cancer. The rigorous journey of chemotherapy, medical therapy and physical therapy has begun for Wayne and his family.   The Team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute is guiding his care, and we are confident that he is in the best hands possible. Now he needs our help.

This tournament has been established to support the Wayne L. Sprouse Medical Expenses Fund that has been established at the Northway Bank in North Conway, NH. This fund will help to defray the growing costs of Wayne’s medical expenses that are not covered by insurance. It should be noted that The Hale’s Location Golf Course and The White Mountain Hotel & Resort are donating 100% of the tournament fees collected to this Fund.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses and individuals. Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze hole-sponsorships are available, as well as, gift bag sponsors, beverage cart sponsors and more.
