2017 Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-a-Thon at King Pine

King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort is excited to announce the next beneficiary of Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon to be held in East Madison, New Hampshire March 17-18, 2017. All funds raised with this year’s event will benefit Sanbornville, New Hampshire’s Faith Holt, an 11-year-old girl living with skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome. This year’s goal is to purchase Faith’s family a wheelchair accessible van.

cynthias-challenge3Faith’s Story

Faith was born pre-maturely and spent her first one hundred days in a neonatal intensive care unit. The combination of skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome require Faith to wear a soft-shelled helmet because she does not have a cranial cap. Due to multiple surgeries and her daily seizures, she uses a wheelchair for her mobility. Faith is the daughter of Doug Holt, an Air Force Veteran who served in Desert Storm, and sister to older brothers, Sean (19), Devin (16) and Cody (12). Faith’s mother, Stephanie Holt, passed away when she was six-years-old. A wheelchair accessible van would be of incredible assistance to the Holt family to get Faith and his other children to their daily activities and appointments.

About Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon

Now in its fourth year, Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon has raised over $131,000 to benefit children and their families. Starting in 2014, Cynthia Verrill was the first benefactor and resulted in her name being used to name the event. $35,000 raised for Cynthia was used to provide a seizure detecting service dog. The second year, the event raised over $35,000 for Samantha Gillard who was in need of a wheel chair accessible van and the third year raised $61,000 for Kevin Dall to purchase a wheel chair accessible van.

King Pine Hosts PSIA & AASI Level 1 Exam January 28-29

East Madison, N.H. — Approximately 20 ski instructors will be at King Pine Ski Area this weekend seeking their Alpine Level 1 certification from the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). Examiners from the Eastern Division of PSIA will spend two days evaluating the candidates against national certification standards for ski teaching. According to the PSIA-AASI (American Association of Snowboard Instructors) website, certification standards provide a consistent training framework for instructors and represent a standard of competency for ski teaching across the United States that is transferrable from division to division. No matter where you live, once an instructor is certified by PSIA or AASI, they’ll teach from the same platform and to the same standards as PSIA-AASI members from across the country.

“We are excited to be the host ski area for this PSIA Level 1 Exam event,” said Trisha Jacobson, King Pine Ski Area’s Director of Ski and Snowboard School. “Though many of our ski and snowboard instructors, coaches and trainers are already PSIA and AASI Level 1, 2 and 3 certified, this is the first time that King Pine has been the host ski area for a certification exam. I am proud of our 12 new instructor candidates who have been working hard with our training staff to prepare for this event. We also look forward to welcoming instructors from several other ski areas who will be joining us for this event. We wish all the candidates success this weekend and beyond as they join PSIA, expand their professional expertise and bring it all back to their ski areas and into their lessons!”

About The PSIA and AASI

With more than 10,600 members, the Eastern Division of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA-E) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) is the largest of the nine divisions that make up PSIA and AASI. The Eastern Division members represent nearly 35% of more than 31,400 national members. Members live and work in seven regions up and down the East Coast, teaching for more than 250 snowsports schools.
