The Medallion Opera House will host internationally known guitarist Peter Griggs in a concert, “The Guitar in America,” on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.  In this program, Mr. Griggs traces the history of the guitar in the United States, performing traditional country dances, folk songs, blues, ragtime, jazz, and several of Griggs’ own compositions.  A vocalist as well as an expert finger-style guitarist, Griggs will perform several songs by composers such as Robert Johnson, “Mississippi” John Hurt, Duke Ellington and others.  He also discusses the evolution of the guitar from its origins as a folk instrument through its gradual acceptance in the concert hall and recording studio, to its position today as an essential voice in American music. There is something for listeners of all tastes on this wide-ranging program.

Mr. Griggs has presented more than 500 solo guitar concerts throughout the USA, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Low Countries, Scandinavia and eastern Europe at art centers, festivals, museums, churches, jazz clubs and other venues.  His recordings are available on Folkways Records, Music of the World, Treecastle Music and E360.  He was based for more than ten years in Dusseldorf, Germany and now resides in Brooklyn, New York.  To listen to Griggs’ music, visit his channel on YouTube.

Critics in the USA, Germany and the United Kingdom have hailed Griggs as “a master of expressive sounds” known for his “sizzling guitar playing” and “sophisticated and highly enjoyable” programs.  Germany’s Bergische Morning Post put it this way:  “an almost unbelievable talent — Peter Griggs performs magic!”

Griggs is on a personal mission to bring live music back into local communities.  His performance in Gorham is a perfect opportunity to unplug the computer, get out of the house, and enjoy the pleasures that only live music performance can provide.

The Medallion Opera House is located in the Gorham Town Hall at 20 Park Street in Gorham, NH 03581.  Admission is $12, and tickets are available in advance at Gorham Town Hall, White Mountain Cafe and online at:  www.medallionoperahouse.org.  The concert is sponsored by ColorWorks in Gorham.  For more information, contact Denise Vallee at 603-466-3322 ext. 3.

On Friday June 26th at 7:30 pm, myths, dances and legends come to Gorham when virtuoso guitarist, Aaron Larget-Caplan, returns to Medallion Opera House, Gorham Town Hall, 20 Park Street, Gorham with Chicago-based dancer and choreographer, Ayako Kato, for a passionate and exciting program titled Of Heaven & Earth, exploring music and movement in music by J.S. Bach, Gershwin, Schubert and contemporary American and Japanese composers Ken Ueno and Keigo Fujii.

This one night-only performance is sponsored in part by the Tassey Group and Top Notch Inn and is also a celebration of Larget-Caplan’s latest solo CD release The Legend of Hagoromo on the UK label Stone Records. The CD features virtuoso guitar music on a Japanese theme by composers from Japan and the USA. Aaron is the first American artist and guitarist featured on the label. Aaron & Ayako will be performing the program at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in Connecticut prior to Gorham’s concert so don’t miss out!

Fresh from a five-country tour in Europe and Russia, Aaron is thrilled to be returning to the Medallion Opera House, where he last performed in 2011. “The audience and acoustic were so memorable, that when Ayako and I decided to tour the program, it was on the top of my list! Ayako is an award-winning dancer and choreographer and brings a special Far East aesthetic and experience to her work, which compliments both the spiritual elements of Bach and the Eastern elements of contemporary music. I think people will be very impressed with the collaboration. This will also be Ayako’s first performance in New Hampshire so I am very excited to be able to present her to the North Country!”
