Early Music Week at World Fellowship

The 2017 World Fellowship’s Early Music Week, from June 22nd to June 29th, 2017, will explore the fruitful and multifaceted perspective of nature in music and the performing arts with the help of their talented and energetic faculty, inspired by the breath-taking natural surroundings of Mount Chocorua and Whitton Pond, and sustained by the garden-fresh organic vegetables on everyone’s dinner plates.

early music week.jpegThe World Fellowship describes nature’s strong influence on music since the days of Pythagoras: Natural imagery informed the lyrics of many medieval songs and musicians expanded their music by imitating the sounds of birds and animals, whose physical gestures also inspired new dance movements. In the Renaissance, the dynamics of wind and water gained their musical counterparts, and it wasn’t long before madrigals were turning landscapes, with their mountains, valleys, plains, heat and cold, heights and depths, into song. The inner aspects of human nature, such as pulse, breathe, sleep, excitement, rage, melancholy, and sorrow, came to be represented as well, often in a pastoral setting, with the help of musical-rhetorical figures. In the resulting form, opera, instrumental music and dance (along with costumes and scenery) brought the natural and human worlds together.

Mt. Washington Valley Golf Tournament Tees Up for the 16th Year!

mwvcc golf tournament.pngTee off with friends at the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, June 16th, at the North Conway Country Club. This is a fun, scramble format tournament for golfers of all abilities and a wonderful way to kick off Father’s Day weekend. Registration opens at 7:45am and runs until 8:50am, with announcements at 8:50am and the shotgun start at 9:00am. The tournament has a planned five-hour playing time, and convenes for a 2:00pm barbecue lunch where winners will be announced and players can bid on a silent auction. Players can register as individuals for $120.00, or as teams of four, for $400.00.

Last year’s popular Event’s Punch Card returns for this tournament and can be purchased for $25 with your online or day of play registration. The card allows entry to various on-course events and includes raffle tickets, mulligans and, NEW this year, the Hole #10 Golf Ball Launcher sponsored by Eastern Propane & Oil to exclusively benefit MWV Leadership scholarship assistance programs. You get to shoot your own ball, hopefully, onto the green 354 yards away.

In addition to awards, and raffles, there are many “Hole-in- One” prizes to win, sponsored by members of the community. Crest Auto World is sponsoring Hole #4, where the first player to hit a hole-in- one will win a 2017 Fiat 500. Profile Power Sports is sponsoring Hole #13, where the first player to hit a hole-in- one will win an ATV. Other Hole-in- One prizes include a set of Titleist Irons, and a $750 Gift Certificate for North Conway Country Club Pro Shop.

“The annual Chamber golf tournament is all about having fun. While we’re all there to play, and improve our handicap, we get to enjoy friends and colleagues, a fantastic course, delicious lunch and a fun event to spend time with Dad,” says Scott Gleason, event coordinator for the tournament.

Mountain Garden Club’s Spring Plant Sale

spring plant saleThis year, the Mountain Garden Club’s acclaimed annual Spring Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at the North Conway Community Center from 9:30-11:30am, or until plants are sold out.

The annual Spring Plant sale offers a wide variety of special plants lovingly cultivated by the Mountain Garden Club members. Shoppers can choose from annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets. This annual sale is treasured by plant enthusiasts throughout the Mt. Washington Valley and is for a good cause! The sale benefits the Mountain Garden Club Alice T. Madden Scholarship fund that provides educational scholarships for Valley residents pursuing plant science disciplines as well as their community beautification projects.

 

About the Mountain Garden Club

The Mountain Garden Club is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Established in 1973, the organization is a Federated member of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs – District I and of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. – New England Region branch. Membership is open to all residents of the Mount Washington Valley, with dues of $20 per year for Active Members. The club presently holds 192 members.

Among its many projects, the Mountain Garden Club is actively engaged in roadside beautification and environmental education and conservation of the Mount Washington Valley. The club sponsors many events, including flower sales for cancer awareness, scholarship funds, and flower shows that benefit local organizations.

The Mountain Garden Club works with local nursing homes in their Garden Therapy as well provides youth programs to introduce others to the benefits of horticulture, the importance of plant education, and teaching others how they can plant and protect native plants of the Mount Washington Valley.

The Friends of Jackson Public Library Annual Book Sale

On Saturday, May 27th-Sunday, May 28th, the Friends of Jackson Public Library will host their annual book sale at the Whitney Community Center in downtown Jackson from 10AM-3PM.

friends of the jackson public library.jpgThe book sale is a vital fundraiser for the Friends of the Jackson Library, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit group of community members that help the library through planning, funding and hosting programs to support the library’s book budget, technology upgrades, equipment, and furnishings.

To help with this annual sale, the Friends of Jackson Library will happily accept donations of books throughout the year. They ask that interested donors please bring donations to the library during library hours and to not leave items outside or place them in the library’s book drop.

Accepted items include:

  • Books, hardcover and paperback, in good condition.
    No musty, mildewy or moldy books, please!
  • Audio Books on CD only
  • Videos on DVD or Blu-ray only

They cannot accept:

  • Magazines
  • Textbooks of any kind
  • Encyclopedias or dictionaries
  • Condensed books or self-help books
  • VHS tapes and cassette tapes

Arts, Antiques, and Treasures Event to Benefit MWV Arts Association

Treasure seekers, come find your treasure! Browse arts, antiques, and treasures galore at the Conway Market Place on Friday, May 12th and Saturday, May 13th to benefit the Mt. Washington Valley Arts Association. Discover fabulous art pieces, antiques, and treasures while supporting a local non-profit centered on building a strong arts community in the Valley!

2017 Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-a-Thon at King Pine

King Pine Ski Area at Purity Spring Resort is excited to announce the next beneficiary of Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon to be held in East Madison, New Hampshire March 17-18, 2017. All funds raised with this year’s event will benefit Sanbornville, New Hampshire’s Faith Holt, an 11-year-old girl living with skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome. This year’s goal is to purchase Faith’s family a wheelchair accessible van.

Faith was born pre-maturely and spent her first one hundred days in a neonatal intensive care unit. The combination of skeletal dysplasia, seizure disorder and Crane-Heise Syndrome require Faith to wear a soft-shelled helmet because she does not have a cranial cap. Due to multiple surgeries and her daily seizures, she uses a wheelchair for her mobility. Faith is the daughter of Doug Holt, an Air Force Veteran who served in Desert Storm, and sister to older brothers, Sean (19), Devin (16) and Cody (12). Faith’s mother, Stephanie Holt, passed away when she was six-years-old. A wheelchair accessible van would be of incredible assistance to the Holt family to get Faith and his other children to their daily activities and appointments.

cynthias-challengeKing Pine asks participants to donate $99 per person for 24 hours of skiing, snowboarding, and fun. This ticket price includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, a T-shirt, games, snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the night.  Kids ages 8 and under ski for free.

Raffle tickets will also be available to purchase for a chance to win a variety of fabulous prizes, including a Private Duck Tour of Boston donated by Boston Duck Tours, a Valley Train Guest Card for 2 adults and 2 children at the Conway Scenic Railroad, and the grand prize: 3 nights’ lodging in a one bedroom condominium in the Aspens at Jackson Hole Resort Lodging and 2 day lift tickets with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

About Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon

Now in its fourth year, Cynthia’s Challenge 24-Hour Ski-A-Thon has raised over $131,000 to benefit children and their families. Starting in 2014, Cynthia Verrill was the first benefactor and resulted in her name being used to name the event. $35,000 raised for Cynthia was used to provide a seizure detecting service dog. The second year, the event raised over $35,000 for Samantha Gillard who was in need of a wheel chair accessible van and the third year raised $61,000 for Kevin Dall to purchase a wheel chair accessible van.

cynthias-challenge2Cynthia’s Challenge was created in an effort to ease the financial burden upon children and their families associated with specialty medical needs. King Pine Ski Area supports Cynthia’s Challenge with the support of local business and the surrounding community.

28th Annual Chocolate Festival

On Sunday, February 26th join us for the sweetest day on the trails at the 28th Annual Chocolate Festival! Spend a day of outdoor winter fun and indulge in sweet treats to benefit the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation, a non-profit organization. The foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to providing Conway residents, taxpayers, and school age children with access to winter recreation opportunities including snowshoeing and Nordic skiing at no cost.

Whether traveling through the trail stops by cross country ski, snowshoe, or by car, participants will enjoy the spectacular scenery, warm hospitality, and great chocolate treats of the Mount Washington Valley. For those that choose to cross country ski or snowshoe, unleash your inner winter adventurer by embarking on our groomed 45-km trail network!

Storybook Character Breakfasts to Benefit Believe in Books Literacy Foundation

Visit the Theater in the Wood throughout the months of February, March, and April to meet some of your favorite Storybook Characters for a cause! Starting at 10 am, enjoy a tasty pancake breakfast with the Believe in Books Foundation’s very own 100 Acre Wood Maple Syrup. Enjoy a storybook reading surrounded with new friends,  and meet with the characters afterwards.

The morning will include a book swap (bring a gently used book and swap it with another), a pancake breakfast including our own 100 Acre Wood Maple Syrup, a storybook reading and visit involving the character of the day, as well as access to the 100 Acre Wood Trail System!  After your meal, visit our Maple Sugar Shack afterward to see how we make it!

Northeast Credit Union Celebrates 80th Anniversary By Contributing to Their Community

Portsmouth, N.H. – Northeast Credit Union celebrated their 80th anniversary by spreading their generosity and community support to three local non-profits. The credit union asked community members to help them choose local non-profits to receive donations. After receiving over 2,000 votes for 15 different non-profit organizations, NECU would like to congratulate Zebra Crossings of Dover, N.H., an organization that enriches the lives of children with a chronic health conditions through fun and engaging medically-supervised programs. Not far behind was Connor’s Climb of Exeter, N.H., receiving a surprise donation of $1,000, followed by UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center of Goffstown, N.H., receiving $500 from the credit union.

Grateful for such a generous donation, Astrid Wielens, Executive Director of Zebra Crossings expressed, “Zebra Crossings provides empowerment programs for youth with chronic medical conditions. We aim to lessen the burden of chronic medical conditions by connecting kids through play and providing respite for caregivers. It is only through community support like this that we can make a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve.”

On behalf of Connor’s Climb of Exeter, N.H., another grateful non-profit for Northeast Credit Union’s generosity,  State Representative Susan Stover described the importance of such a donation, as the foundation thrives from donations, helping them fund Signs of Suicide (SOS) training for NH educators and schools to prevent youth suicide.

Development Director Veronica Lester from the third appreciative non-profit, UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center, expressed gratitude towards the community and Northeast Credit Union, saying, “The funds couldn’t have come at a better time and will be used as unrestricted funding, which is invaluable to the success of UpReach and allows us the flexibility to use the money toward our most current needs. We thank NECU for their support in allowing UpReach to provide safe, affordable and high quality equine assisted activities and therapies to individuals in the greater Manchester community.”

Enjoy the Foliage with Bike for Books this October!

 

The North Conway Public Library will hold its 11th annual Bike for Books fund raiser on Saturday, October 6th, 2012.

This scenic mountain bike tour of the Mount Washington Valley during peak fall foliage season offers different route options to accommodate various ability levels from novice to expert mountain biker and for children. The big tour will begin between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. (your choice!) and is expected to conclude by early afternoon; shorter routes can be done in an hour or two. Every participant can choose their own route and own pace since this is a tour and not a race. The mountain bike trails will be well-marked, nobody will get lost. Food and drinks along the way and afterwards will be provided to all participants.

All bikers and volunteers will receive a book, a BPA-free bike bottle, and are invited to a free big lunch at the finish where Elvio’s pizza, hot soup, desserts, and fresh coffee from Frontside Grind will be served. Many local businesses have donated numerous free giveaways and gift certificates to be given away on a random draw basis.

Participants should be on a mountain bike with knobby, fat tires and children should have some off-road cycling experience. You can come and bike for an hour or all day; easy or difficult routes- it’s your choice!

A benefit for the Library’s children’s room, the registration fee is $20 for individuals, $35 for couples, $40 for families, and $10 for students 16 and under. Registration forms may be picked up at the North Conway Public Library or downloaded at http://www.NorthConwayLibrary.com .

Registration on the day of the event will be held at the Whitaker Woods Rec Building (“Whitaker Woods Homesite”) off Route 16 across from White Mountain Oil) in North Conway from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
