2017 Chili Cook-Off and Feelin’ Good 5K Race

Saturday, April 8th is the time to shake off the winter chills and join us for a fabulous foodie event to kick off our Spring season here in Mt Washington Valley! There will be plenty of chili and cornbread to keep you fueled for a day of fun, festivity, and a 5K race, plus North Conway Village shopping and the event’s  Red Hot Stops where you can find treats and shopping deals.

chili-5k-logoThis is the first year of the Feelin’ Good 5k Race through the White Mountain Milers. Burn some calories before indulging in chili and cornbread samples at the Cook-Off and explore beautiful North Conway Village by running or walking in the race! The race kicks off at Schouler Park in North Conway at 9:30am, where participants will race around the village and near Cranmore Mountain, finishing back at the park. Awards will be given to the top three overall runners and walkers.

The Feelin’ Good 5K is open for registration through White Mountain Milers and the RunReg website. The Race Fee is $35 per person and includes your entry to the Chili Cook-Off, access to the After Party at Abenaki Trail Restaurant, and store discounts at the Red Hot Stops.

About the Annual Chili Cookoff

Hosted by the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, the annual Chili Cook-off has featured the culinary creations of professional chefs, individuals, local organizations, and nonprofits for many years. What started with just a few vendors has now grown to more than 40 vendors. Hundreds of hungry chili fans will fill The Village of North Conway tasting the best of the Valley’s chili recipes.

Professional and non-professional chefs are welcome to register their team for their chance to win fabulous prizes and bragging rights. Chef registration is open and filling up fast! There are a variety of sponsorship opportunities available for businesses to promote their brand. Sponsorship packages vary in cost and exposure and there are packages available for nonprofits. chili-cookoff2In this event, ticket holders are judges, too! In purchasing tickets and sampling many delicious chili and cornbread recipes, ticket holders are in control of the “People’s Choice” vote. Ticket holders will receive three different colored tickets for use as ballots – one for Best Chili, one for Best Cornbread, and one for Best Display of Theme.

Tickets for the Chili Cook-Off are $15 for adults and $7 for children, with free admission for children under 3. Interested parties may purchase Early Bird tickets by contacting the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, and tickets will be available on the day of the event for the same prices at the ticket booth.

There are lodging package agreements available for interested lodging properties in the area as well. Contact the Chamber for more information.

Plaid is the New Black on Friday, November 27

White Birch Books see a Black Friday and we want it to turn Plaid! Friday, Nov. 27 is the biggest shopping day of the year. Corporate retailers have dubbed it Black Friday, but we encourage you to think outside the big box and make it a Plaid Friday, a way of celebrating independents. Annual Book & Art Sale

The North Conway Public Library invites artists and crafters to participate in its Annual Book & Art Sale on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, 2015 on the library’s lawn, 2719 White Mountain Highway, North Conway.

The two-day craft fair is part of the library’s gigantic annual book sale. Hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on both days. Take advantage of this already successful event that draws in a lot of visitors and display & sell your own art.

All are welcome to display their creations including painters, photographers, jewelry makers, potters and sculptors as well as handcrafters. Exhibitors need to bring their own tables and/or tents.

Space is limited so please register early for the best spots. You can sign up for the whole weekend or for a single day only. Registration is $50 if payment received before June 30 and $60 thereafter for both days. Single-day participation is $40 only.

Day 1:  Hiking in the White Mountain National Forest

Awake and enjoy a lovely breakfast at your inn, B&B or resort.  Or, explore the restaurants and coffee houses in Mt Washington Valley.  A few options for breakfast include Priscilla’s Country Kitchen, Bagels Plus, or Big Dave’s Bagels and Deli  where breakfast is served all day!  You can pick up lunch to take with you too at these restaurants.

Late afternoon:  In need of a pick-me-up?  How about a hot or iced coffee at one of Mt Washington Valley’s coffee houses?  Stop into The Met Coffee House or Frontside Grind in North Conway,  J-Town Deli in Jackson or The Local Grocer in Intervale for a fabulous homemade pastry or cupcake and a cuppa Joe.

Dinner:  There are so many options to choose from!  If it’s a Tuesday, try Max’s Restaurant at Snowvillage Inn where locals are treated to a specially planned and price meal.  Hint:  On Tuesdays everyone’s a local at Max’s Restaurant.  Also in Eaton, the Palmer House Pub at the Inn at Crystal Lake is a great option.  And for fresh and local, fine dining or casual (you’ll find both here), try the Oxford House in Fryeburg.

Day 2:  Shopping Day

Everyone loves to shop while on vacation.  What makes it even better in Mt Washington Valley is that shopping at the region’s 200 outlets, shops, boutiques and stores is also tax-free.

Start the day in North Conway Village, visiting the independently owned specialty shops in the village and the Shops at Norcross Circle and Eastern Slope Inn Plaza.  Don’t miss Zeb’s General Store, home to the largest collection of New England-made specialty foods in the country and the  Handcrafters Barn for New-England made goods and Skinny towels and washcloths.  You’ll also want to be sure to visit The Penguin Gallery of NH for jewelry, gifts and home goods, Spruce Hurricane for unique women’s apparel and the coolest collection of boots, Beggar’s Pouch Leather for hand-made leather goods, Fields of Ambrosia or Funky Bubble for soaps, lotions and potions and Soy Fire Candle for unusual gifts.  For sporting goods try Olympia Sports, Stan and Dans, Bob & Terry’s Sports Outlet or Red Jersey Cycleryfor bikes and accessories.

From there, you may want to visit Settlers’ Green Outlet Village and Settlers’ Crossing where you’ll find more than 60 brand-name manufacturers outlets.  Whether you’re looking for back-to-school options for the kids, sports equipment, fine china, jewelry, home goods, specialty foods or men’s and women’s apparel, you’ll find it here.

Afternoon pick-me-up:  After an aerobic day of shopping, stop in to The White Mountain Cupcakery either in their Settlers’ Green or their North Conway Village location, or cool off with an ice cream cone at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop, or Spoons Ice Cream Parlor at Horsefeathers.  There’s also Gelato at The Met Coffee Shop.

Day 3: Ziplining

There are plenty of options when it comes to ziplining in Mt Washington Valley.  Choose from any of these part-day zipline tours.

Attitash Mountain Resort, Bartlett, NH: Fly high on the new Attitash ZipTour above the tree canopy from the summit of Bear Peak over to mid-mountain of Attitash and from there to the base of Attitash. Bretton Woods Canopy Tour, Bretton Woods, NH: Situated high on the slopes of Bretton Woods and descending over 1000 feet of elevation, the 3-hour tour takes nature-lovers and thrill-seekers across a series of tree-top zip lines through a network of platforms high in the ancient hemlocks. Cranmore Mountain Resort , North Conway, NH: This thrill ride lets you experience the sensation of flying, while accelerating 700 feet down the mountainside on a suspended cable. Great for couples, you can even share the fun with your partner on the comfortable side-by-side seats. Monkey Trunks High Ropes Adventure and Zipline, Chocorua, NH: Participants begin with ground school and receive a safety instruction on how to navigate through the course. They then move on to the Green course to demonstrate they have the ability to properly use their equipment. After completing these two stages, participants will progress through the levels of the courses in order of Blue, Silver, Red and Black – each level becomes progressively more challenging. The course features eight ziplines over and through the trees, challenges that include swinging beams, tightropes, rolling logs, hanging tires, cargo nets and more.  All activities are as low as 10 feet and as high as 55 feet off the ground.  Reserve tickets online.  Click here.

Wildcat Mountain’s Ziprider, Pinkham Notch, NH: Mt Washington Valley’s only ZipRider is now twice the capacity and even more vertical fun with a total of 4 zip line cables. The Wildcat Mountain ZipRider descends 2,100 feet over the trails, treetops and the Peabody River to a landing platform located a short distance from the Main Base Lodge. Riders travel on cables suspended at heights up to 70 feet on a 12 percent grade, and reach speeds up to 45 miles per hour. Day 4:  Nature at its best

Finish your romantic getaway with a nature adventure.  Hand and camera-in-hand, enjoy a self-guided waterfall tour.  Mt Washington Valley abounds with gorgeous waterfalls, many of which are accessible or just a short hike from where you’ll park.  Click here for a list of all the scenic waterfalls in Mt Washington Valley and then set out on your own self-guided tour.  There’s nothing better than cooling off beneath the gentle falls along a cool mountain river at Jackson Falls or hiking in on a full-moon night for a little private skinny dipping in Diana’s Baths.

Another option for a wonderfully fun dinner is to dine aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad.  The dinner train combines a scenic trip with a nostalgic dining car experience and delicious food.

North Conway Music Center To Hold Free Guitar Stringing Event

 

 

 

D’addario and North Conway Music team up to restring local guitars for free.
North Conway Music Center and renowned string manufacturer D’Addario have joined forces to give away up to 40 sets of their high end NYXL guitar strings during this local, free restringing event.
The restringing event will be held on Saturday, June 20th from Noon to 3PM at their North Conway Location in the Red Barn Center and is open to everyone.
Up to 40 lucky guitar owners will get a new set of NYXL guitars strings set up on their guitars on the spot by North Conway Music’s luthier (guitar maker/repair tech) Ian Bird. 20 electric guitar sets, and 20 acoustic guitar sets will be available.
Manager John Cotter said “This free giveaway is a great thing for local guitar players. The new D’Addario NYXL strings are very popular and sound fantastic. And who doesn’t like free?”
Additional giveaways will go on at random throughout the day including some sweet Planet Waves products.

Settlers’ Green Teams Up With Conway Magic 104 For A Chance To See Taylor Swift This Summer

Settlers’ Green is psyched to announce a radio campaign on Conway Magic 104.5 with giveaways every time a Taylor Swift song plays. The campaign starts Wednesday, June 3, and leads up to the Summer Solstice Sizzle event  taking place at Settlers’ Green Outlet Village on Saturday, June 20, where shoppers will have a chance to enter to win a pair of tickets to see Taylor Swift live, in concert this summer.

Tune in to the airwaves on Magic 104.5 starting Wednesday, June 3, and listen for the hits “Shake It Off,” “Style,” or “Blank Space.” Listeners will have the chance to win a $10 Settlers’ Green gift certificate when “Style” plays, a free milkshake at Kaity’s Big Chill when “Shake It Off” plays, and a $10 Starbucks gift card when “Blank Space” plays. In addition, Magic 104 will be giving away a Magic 104 Prize Pack every time Swift’s new hit, “Bad Blood,” plays.

“We acquired tickets to Taylor Swift to give away as part of our ‘250 Days of Happy’ campaign,” said Laura Tuveson, marketing and events assistant at Settlers’ Green whose been surprising the community all year long with these “happy” giveaways. “Come June 20, we’ll hopefully have one very happy kid from the North Conway area going to the concert along with a very brave parent.”

Radio winners will be entered automatically into the drawing for the concert tickets. The only other way to enter to win the concert tickets is to be at Settlers’ Green on Saturday, June 20 at the Summer Solstice Sizzle event taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free National Flags & First Sidewalk Sales of the Season at Settlers’ Green For Upcoming Canadian Holiday & Memorial Day Weekend

Expect back-to-back weekends of great sales as many of the stores at Settlers’ Green host the first sidewalk sales of the summer season, starting May 15-18 for Canada’s Victoria Day Weekend followed by another four-day stretch of sales from May 22-25 for Memorial Day Weekend.

Adding to the spirit, Settlers’ Green Customer Service will giving away national flags to shoppers on each holiday weekend. Customer Service is located at Suite C13 near Brandli’s Pizza Grille. Flags available first-come, first-served while supplies last starting at 10 a.m. on each Saturday (May 16 & 23) of the holiday weekends.
