The Orchard Revolution: Addressing obesity’s impact on our community

Miranda Leavitt Diabetes Fund, CHOP to present film and panel discussion on Nov. 6

Matt Byron’s documentary film, “Orchard Revolution,” poses some tough questions for chopcommunities about the relationship between obesity and chronic illnesses like diabetes. Produced in Portland, Maine and released to the public earlier this year, the movie includes interviews with doctors, authors, attorneys, personal trainers and environmental experts on how to improve the health of the American people as well as the environment.

On Thursday, Nov. 6, from 6-8pm at the Theatre in the Wood, Intervale, the Community Health & Obesity Prevention (CHOP) group will host an evening of education and discussion on the health challenges of obesity and how it can be addressed as a community. The film’s director, Matt Byron, will join a panel of several local people actively involved in improving awareness of the individual and societal impact of chronic disease. Byron’s film challenges communities to plant fruit trees as an expression of support for local foods and improved nutrition.

Sponsored by the Miranda Fund and the Memorial Hospital Foundation, the free public event will include a showing of the first segment of the “Orchard Revolution.” This will be followed by a panel discussion with Brenda McKay, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator of the Miranda Center for Diabetes & Endocrinology at Memorial Hospital; Trish Murray, DO, physician from T. Murray Wellness Center; and Brenda Leavitt, mother of Miranda Leavitt after whom the hospital’s diabetes center is named.

“This event is a great opportunity for CHOP and the Miranda Fund to work hand-in-hand,” Brenda Leavitt said. “Miranda so wanted to help educate people in our community about diabetes, and to help people understand the differences between Types 1 and 2. Most importantly, through education, we want to make people aware that Type 2 diabetes can largely be controlled through a healthy diet and exercise.”

Dr. Murray has been working with Leavitt and Memorial Hospital through CHOP, which is a subcommittee of the White Mountain Valley Community Health Council. CHOP is organized around the idea of collective impact where various community members and organizations work toward common goals that address a mutual concern.

“Many different community organizations have come together in a collaborative way through CHOP, and that’s how this event came to be,” Murray explained. “Our common goal is to foster a sense of community that promotes education and communication toward optimal health and wellness.”

There is no cost to attend the event, and free babysitting will be available for children ages 2 and up. Doors open at 6:00 pm and those attending are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food items for the local End 68 Hours of Hunger chapter. Information will be available on diabetes, nutrition and the CHOP program.

Murray said it’s important for everyone to work together to address issues that affect us all. The White Mountain Community Health Council participated in Memorial Hospital’s 2013 Community Health Needs Assessment that compared local health indicators to state and national averages.

“The needs assessment report identified several local key health problems that really warrant our attention including the overweight and obese population in both children and adults,” she said. “We all have different talents, knowledge and strengths, but I believe that together we can foster more community awareness and interaction. We can educate and communicate with each other about ways to be healthier — for ourselves and for our environment.”

Wildcat Mountain’s Largest Snowmaking Upgrade in Ski Area History Bigger Than Planned

Wildcat Mountain has completed the largest snowmaking upgrade in its history installing over 10 miles of new snowmaking water and air pipe, acquiring 227 new high output/high efficiency snow guns and completing the construction of a new, state-of-the-art, mid-mountain, booster pump house. Over $2 million dollars has been invested to dramatically improve the snowmaking efficiency and output of Wildcat’s snowmaking system.

During the 2013/14 season, Wildcat worked with some of the industry’s leading snowmaking equipment manufacturers in what is believed to be the largest testing and demonstration project ever conducted at any mountain in the East. Following successful tests in a variety of weather conditions, delivery of new snow guns from HKD and Snow Logic have been arriving this summer and fall. In addition to the original 131 gun investment of almost one half a million dollars, Peak Resorts has recently announced an expansion of the project. An additional $330,000 was approved to acquire 96 more high efficiency units. The total investment in new guns now totals more than $800,000. Trails that will directly benefit from the snowmaking improvement project include Polecat, Lynx, Upper Catapult, Middle Wildcat, Wild Kitten, and Bobcat.

As part of the original project, a new $350,000 booster pump house building facility was constructed and completed, including the installation of new diesel motors, booster pumps, diesel filtration system, heat, electricity and 3,600 gallon fuel storage capacity. Excavation of a functioning work road to and the area around the top of Middle Lynx was required to accommodate demolition of the old pump house and allow access for cement trucks to build a new foundation complete with custom grated cement floor.

From the early planning stage, the goal of the project has been to modernize and improve how efficiently the snowmaking system operates, which was a factor when deciding which technology to purchase. “Today’s snowmaking technology is so impressive and we estimate Wildcat will burn 50,000 gallons less diesel fuel annually as a result of the upgrade,” said Peak Resorts’ Northeast Project Manager, Brendan Ryan. “The completed project will ultimately lead to using less power and burning less fuel while producing more, high quality snow and the new pump house will ensure snowmaking reliability on the key upper mountain trails.”

Wildcat Mountain is home to New Hampshire’s most powerful quad summit chair lift and is renowned for its high summit elevation over 4,000 feet and greater than 2,100 vertical feet of skiing and riding. Wildcat’s elevation and proximity to Mt. Washington contributes greater natural snowfall and a long winter/spring season annually. Wildcat Mountain has consistently been rated #1 scenery by readers of SKI Magazine. For further information, please visit www.skiwildcat.com or call 1-888-SKI WILD.

Community Celebrations Committee Seeking Entries for Conway Holiday Parade

Conway Community Celebrations Committee is planning to reinstate the parade as part of the slate of holiday related activities held traditionally in Conway Village the first Saturday of December.  Businesses and individuals seeking to participate in the parade should visit www.mwvpa.org to register; click on “sign up to participate in the holiday parade.”

“This is a great opportunity for businesses to promote themselves and to support the community,” says Jessica Whitelaw, member of the committee. “We also welcome community organizations and individuals who want to simply come out and be part of this event.”

All floats are required to have a rail around the entire float at least 24 inches high to prevent children or adults from falling off. Creativity, costumes, music and lights are encouraged. There will be judges who will award money prizes for the most creative top three entries.

There will be holiday activities preceding the afternoon parade and a tree lighting and Holiday on Ice Skating Show will follow. All events will be held in Conway Village and are free and open to the public due to business and community support provided through the Caretakers Campaign developed by the Community Celebrations Committee of the Mt. Washington Valley Presevation Association. This association’s mission is to help beautify and protect the area and to preserve Mt. Washington Valley traditions. For more information or to make a donation to this cause, visit www.mwvpa.org and click on “Become a Caretaker” or call 603-356-5701, x302.

Snowmaking Improvements for 2014/15 Winter Season Exceed Initial Project Expectations at Attitash Mountain Resort

Attitash Mountain Resort’s off-season capital improvement projects have exceeded initial plans announced last spring and will significantly increase the efficiency and output of its snowmaking system for the coming 2014/15 winter season. A majority of the improvements have been made on Bear Peak, including Morning Star, Snowdancer, Wandering Skis, Kachina, Avenger, Moonbeam, Trillium and Mythmaker trails, as well as the Abenaki Terrain Park.

The project included the installation of new snowmaking water and air pipes, rebuilding of pumps and motors and the installation of a combination of 285 new, high-efficiency, low-energy HKD and Snow Logic brand snow guns, 179 more guns than originally planned. These new state-of-the-art guns will dramatically improve the ability to produce greater amounts of snow while increasing the efficiency of the snowmaking system. The installation of the 179 additional snow guns increased the amount invested in the snowmaking upgrade by more than $770,000, in addition to the $1 million investment initially announced last spring.

The new guns are capable of producing greater amounts of snow in both marginal and ideal cold temperatures using less energy and are easier to operate than older snow gun technology. This summer’s snowmaking improvements follow the previous year’s $1.3 million Thorne Pond rejuvenation project, a major snowmaking water resource for Attitash.

“We will be focusing even more attention to the quality of our product this season,” said John Lowell, President of Attitash Mountain Resort and Wildcat Mountain. “Peak Resorts’ increased investment this off season in the snowmaking infrastructure and new snow gun technology will be a ‘game changer’ for Attitash Mountain Resort’s snowmaking efforts. We are very excited for what this means for our customers this coming season.”

In addition to snowmaking improvements, Attitash has acquired a new $300,000 Prinoth snow groomer, two new shuttle buses and a new van for transporting guests between Attitash and Bear Peak base areas, parking lots and the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel.  Attitash also added over $80,000 of new Burton snowboard equipment to its rental inventory.

Attitash Mountain Resort, located in the Mount Washington Valley, will celebrate its 50th Anniversary during the 2014/15 ski season, having first opened for skiing on January 26, 1965. Offering two distinct mountains, Attitash and Bear Peak, it is known for its signature terrain parks, ski school and children’s programs, terrain for all abilities, après entertainment, family value, and quality slopeside accommodations featuring the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel. Author at White Birch Books this Weekend!

Saturday afternoon events at the bookstore are an opportunity for local authors to get the word out about their work. White Birch Books is pleased to be hosting Sugar Hill author Cathy Strasser with her first North Country thriller, An Uncertain Grave. Strasser will be at the store on Saturday, October 18, from 1 to 3 p.m.Cathy StrasserIn An Uncertain Grave, a stray hiker reports finding a body on Mt. Lafayette in the North Country, where rugged terrain and sparse population provides the space and isolation to keep any number of secrets. New Hampshire State Troopers Cliff Codey and Mike Eldrich set out to solve the case in spite of the weather, reticent locals and a bored, nosy New York reporter and his ambitious girlfriend who compete with the troopers to discover the victim’s identity.

Uncertain GraveAs the investigation widens, both teams contend with a variety of local residents who have secrets they don’t wish to share. In addition, a shadow from Cliff’s past soon intrudes on the current investigation, complicating matters further. All these threads combine as the killer prepares to take action to keep himself and his secret safe.

Strasser, an author and occupational therapist, lives and writes in Sugar Hill, N.H. She believes her small town is one of the most beautiful areas in the northeast! The area’s hiking trails showcase the mountains, rivers and valleys and provide the setting for An Uncertain Grave and are as much a character as any people in the book.
